Obituary: Margaret Ann Myers

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and artist

Margaret Ann Myers, a resident of Claremont for 62 years, died peacefully on April 6 at the age of 89.

Margaret was born in 1936 on a dairy farm outside Poplar Bluff, Missouri, the second of five children. She often spoke fondly of her childhood, cooking and canning with her mother and attending a one-room schoolhouse near the edge of the family farm. She later graduated as salutatorian from her county high school.

At 17, she attended the University of Missouri to study foods and nutrition. There she met the love of her life, Leonhard Myers, an engineering student recently returned from service in the Korean War. The couple married in 1957. After graduation, she worked at the university managing food services before relocating with her husband to Kansas, where their first daughter, Margaret Eileen, was born.

In 1961, the family moved to Southern California, where daughters Lynn Ann and Kimberly were born. She was a constant source of love and support for her children. When they were young, she created and decorated elaborate birthday cakes; as they grew, she continued to encourage and care for them throughout their lives.

A creative and talented artist, she began studying ceramics in her 30s and quickly discovered a natural gift. She and her husband soon started a ceramics business in their garage, selling her work at local outdoor art shows. The business later expanded to a Los Angeles showroom, and her work was distributed to gift shops across the country. She was proficient in multiple artistic mediums; she was an accomplished watercolorist and at one point taught art welding at Cal Poly Pomona. For many years, she was an active member of the Pomona Valley Art Association. In later life, she developed a passion for fused glass jewelry, creating pieces she gifted to friends and family and sold through the association.

Her faith in God was a steady bedrock throughout her life. She was a charter member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Claremont and remained actively involved in the church community until her passing.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Leonhard; and her siblings Ron, Juanita, Deloris, and Donald. She is survived by her daughters, Margaret Eileen (Frank), Lynn Ann (Joan), and Kimberly (Steve); grandchildren Gabriel and Claire; and nine nieces and nephews.

The family extends special thanks to Pastor Timothy Seals of St. Luke Lutheran Church for his spiritual care, and to her caregivers — especially Marguerite and Linda — for the loving support they provided in her final years.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 25, at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 2050 N. Indian Hill Blvd., Claremont, CA 91711, followed by interment at Oak Park Cemetery, 410 Sycamore Ave., Claremont, CA 91711.
