‘They Called Us Enemy’ at Claremont Colleges Library

The Claremont Colleges Library is hosting a free and public exhibit, “They Called Us Enemy,” through July 1 at Mudd 2, 800 N. Dartmouth Ave., Claremont. The exhibit, based on George Takei’s 2019 graphic memoir, is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and 11a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays. The exhibit is part of LA County Library’s One Book, One Coast program.

“Materials featured in the exhibit are from the Japanese American Incarceration archival collections held by The Claremont Colleges Library Special Collections and Archives,” read a news release. “The items on view tell the story and document the experience of Japanese Americans, including families with young children, who were forced to leave behind most — if not all — of their personal belongings to be confined in prison camps where they tried to ‘normalize’ their experience to cope with the injustice. As you explore these items, you will have the opportunity to read the words of Takei and others to understand how injustices continued even after they were released.”

Free guided tours of “They Called Us Enemy” and an accompanying exhibit, “Scattered Leaves: East Asian Rare Books Across Borders, Regions and Cultures,” take place from 2 to 3 p.m. on Friday, May 22 and May 29. Meet guides in the North Lobby Gallery at Honnold 2.
