My son started ninth grade Wednesday, his first year at Claremont High School. The youngest of four, he’s the last to wind his way through Claremont’s public schools. We’ve no more middle schoolers, and have long since said goodbye to the sweetness of elementary school. Soon my boy will be driving himself to CHS and staking out his independence before flying the coop for college. Presumably.

Pomona College has changed its rules regarding campus demonstrations for the 2024-25 school year, including banning encampments. Claremont Meals on Wheels, the local nonprofit that has been delivering hot meals for 52 years, is rolling out a new introductory offer for a free week of meals for new users. The offer is open to the first 85 new clients 60 and older who live in Claremont and who are temporarily or permanently disabled, recovering from surgery, or those with a chronic illness that prevents them from shopping or preparing meals. Ontario International Airport recently announced Avelo Airlines, a low-cost Houston, Texas airline, would begin offering service to Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport on Thursdays and Sundays beginning October 10.

Highlights of the archival collection donated to Pomona College by civil rights icon Myrlie Evers-Williams will be on view at The Claremont Colleges’ Honnold Library, 800 N. Dartmouth Ave., Monday, August 26 through December 20.
