For the last several weeks, residents near the corner of Seventh Street and Berkeley Avenue have watched with alarm as water surged from the ground and fell into a storm drain near Harrison Avenue. And though the alarm seems well founded, officials say the flow is naturally occurring and will not impact ratepayers’ bills. “In time, this naturally occurring condition will subside. Charges were filed this week against two Pomona residents in connection with a May 17 shooting that left three people injured during an attempted robbery at Super King Market. Michael Abeyta, 27, and Amanda Soto, 37, appeared in Pomona Superior Court Tuesday. Abeyta was charged with five felonies: attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, felon in possession of firearm, criminal threats, and robbery. Abeyta remains in custody at without bail at the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles. Soto, charged with felony robbery, was released on her own recognizance Tuesday. Courier file photo

We must continue to destigmatize the discussion about addiction, focus on helping veterans, and highlight how drug education and early intervention play a significant role in reducing substance use, especially with alcohol. Two would-be robbers are in custody after Claremont Police Department officers responded to a 5:11 p.m. call on Friday from Super King Market, 436 Auto Center Dr., regarding a robbery and shooting during which three people had suffered gunshot wounds. Arriving police and LA County Fire Department personnel rendered aid to the victims, who were transported to a local hospital in stable condition. After viewing surveillance footage, taking statements from witnesses, and enlisting the help of a LA County Sheriff’s Department helicopter, the alleged shooter — 27-year-old Pomona resident Michael Abeyta — was arrested without incident.
