Rental assistance program accepting referrals

The San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments is accepting referrals to its San Gabriel Valley Home Program, a soon to be realized rental assistance and services program funded by Measure A. Claremont tenants in need of emergency rental assistance can fill out a referral at claremontca.gov, search “tenant assistance.”

Eligibility will be determined by the SGVCOG or its service providers, not the City of Claremont according to Deputy City Manager Katie Wand, who said the referral portal is a bridge for local tenants to be referred to the program.

“Eligible households include those who have experienced a qualifying emergency within the past 12 months and are low-, very low-, or extremely low-income, as defined by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD),” according to a post from the city.

“Qualifying” events include, but are not limited to, an action by a landlord, an eviction lawsuit, threat of displacement, loss or delay of income, a medical emergency, a natural disaster, or a sudden increase in critical expenses.

Program staff will prioritize referrals based on needs and will be followed up with by a service provider on a later date, Wand said.

Eligibility and referral acceptance does not guarantee financial assistance. Other services set to be provided by the SGV Home Program include referrals for legal assistance, employment resources, and other supportive services.
