Claremont Unified School District has named Geoffrey Payton and Rose Bomentre (pictured here) as Claremont High School’s new assistant principals of student services. Bomentre is an author, 33-year LA and San Bernardino County educator, and a former Baldy View Regional Occupational Program Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services. Bridges Auditorium, 450 N College Way, Claremont, will host a 90-minute California gubernatorial debate at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28.
“My wife Lisa and I are certainly different in many ways, but we are 100% aligned in our enthusiasm for old weird stuff. (One could argue I’m living proof of her enthusiasm for old weird stuff.) There’s just something cool about holding, wearing, reading, or admiring something someone else has owned and hopefully loved. But not all old weird stuff is innocent.”
“When we recently added up the true cost of producing and delivering the print edition (we did not count reporters, editors, or business employees), the result was eye-opening: the Courier spends $109 a year per print subscription. Subscriptions have never been a major profit center. But historically, they have at least covered the basic cost of getting the newspaper to your doorstep. That is no longer the case.”

Congratulations to Arlene Andrew, one of 20 readers who correctly identified last week’s “Where am I?” as the late Jack Edwards’ 1975 scupture “Rainbow Fountain” at Mt. San Antonio Gardens retirement community in Pomona. It so happened that Edwards’ sculpture appeared in the Courier on March 13, which would have been his 86th birthday. Yvonne Cervantes Coleman has been at the helm of Common Thread Claremont for 10 years now, and over the decade her sewing school has become indispensable among makers of all ages. To celebrate, on Sunday, March 22 she will lead a free and public fashion show and maker showcase featuring current and former students from 2 to 5 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel’s Sequoia Ballroom, 555 W. Claremont Museum of Art is set to open a retrospective exhibit of the late Crispin Gonzalez’s ceramics in April 2027, and is looking for works to be included in the show.
