Two Claremont High School students were among the winners at the 17th annual Artistic Discovery Congressional Art Competition May 9 at the Hilton Hotel in Arcadia.
Congresswoman Judy Chu was on hand for the contest among students in her 28th Congressional District. More than 200 young people competed for scholarships and for a chance to have their art displayed at the U.S. Capitol and Chu’s Washington, D.C. and district offices for one year.
Claremont winners included “Behind SoCal’s Donuts” by Xin Lu, which took fifth place. “Separation” by Andrea Dorantes, a finalist in last year’s contest, earned an honorable mention. Claremont Mayor Jennifer Stark presented the students certificates at the ceremony. Claremont High School art teacher Tamara Kirkpatrick was also in attendance.
“I’m honored to continue this tradition and uplift the voices of our youth through art,” wrote Chu in a statement. “This is truly a special moment because it’s so important to recognize the incredible young artists we have in the San Gabriel Valley. These young artists have all used art to tackle challenging problems, speak about difficult emotions, and to inspire each and every one of us to pursue a better version of ourselves.”
