The boy was arraigned in Pomona Superior Court July 2, where the matter was transferred to juvenile court and continued until July 17.
An online fundraiser has been established by the family of the victim at gofundme.com, search “Support for Jasmyne’s Daughter’s Funeral & Justice.”
“Jasmyne’s world was shattered when her four-month-old daughter lost her life in a tragic incident at a daycare facility,” reads the description at gofundme.com, referencing the name of the infant’s mother. “The funds raised through this campaign will go directly toward covering funeral expenses and the legal costs associated with seeking justice for her daughter.”
Claremont police responded to a medical emergency in the 1400 block of Lynoak Drive at 11:38 a.m. Monday, June 29. LA County Fire Department and CPD administered life saving measures at the scene before the infant was transported to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, and later Children’s Hospital of Orange County, where she died.
Jasmyne Cohn and Anthony Owens told KTLA they believe their daughter was fatally injured due to staff at the daycare facility leaving their daughter unsupervised.
“My child had bruises all over her body. Her head was fractured,” Cohn told KTLA. “I lost my daughter due to the negligence of this daycare.”
The home where the infant was fatally injured is owned by West Covina-based Freshview Properties LLC, according to LA County Assessor’s records. It is now for lease. Safe Haven Property Management commercial broker Diana Kisslingsaid it went on the market “a couple weeks ago” after the current tenant — whom she said had been operating a licensed home daycare facility — was given notice to vacate.
The tenants were contacted July 3 but declined to be interviewed. On Monday, security cameras that had been present at the home on July 3 were removed and the property appeared vacant, with toys and childcare supplies placed on the parkway area adjacent to an impromptu memorial.
Claremont police urged anyone with information related to the incident to call (909) 399-5411. Anonymous tips can be submitted to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
